a cottage garden
Keen plants people, the owners of this garden wanted to reduce the amount of general maintenance by eliminating their lawn. Independently, they were constructing a conservatory. This design introduces low maintenance but not at the expense of interest.
A sunken garden was constructed, and a step led down into it from the conservatory terrace. Raised beds were built around the sunken garden and a seat recess was included in the design for a family bench. An arch was constructed adjacent to the pergola. This leads into the kitchen garden at the rear of the garden, where the greenhouse had been re-sited and raised beds constructed. A raised fish pond was built in the corner of the new terrace and a wall spout keeps the water flowing.
Post and rail construction around the garden maintains a feeling of enclosure whilst keeping a spacious feel to the area. Vistas and views for focal points were identified from various points throughout the garden.
