an outside office space
The brief for this was that it should be a tranquil place for employees to unwind during the working day, have a space for a petanque terrain and re-site the barbecue for social occasions inside and outside working hours.
There were two separate but joined courtyards. Glass walkways adjacent to the building allowed good views of these areas and they were both adjacent to the restaurant. Hardlandscaping for easy access and plenty of seating areas were incorporated into the design to extend its functionality.
An eating area beneath Wisteria clad arches has been constructed in one area; a petanque court built in the other. A bubbling granite stone in a raised pool is the focal point from the main reception area.
The borders were designed for low maintenance. Bamboos, grasses and drout tolerant herbaceous perennials were used. Lines of Cornus kousa and Amelanchier lamarckii were used to give year round structure and interest.
Self clinging climbers have been used to cover the extensive brickwork. Three existing weeping silver birch trees were retained.
